Social Media, Art

I was looking at my are.na channels that I made and admiring the art that I added to my channels and I realized that while I think I’m advancing myself as an artist by looking and studying different mediums and art pieces (which I may be) I’m doing a disservice to my self by not learning about the pieces, how it came to be and what it means to the artist. How can I advance myself if I’m not willing to deeply study those inspiring me?

I came to the result that this is a byproduct of social media. Everything is so fast. It’s easy to like a picture or video of art because it looks cool ,but we have lost the privilege of truly understanding an artist. An example of this is aesthetic pages who just post designer clothing collections and other mediums of art for the purpose of upholding the aesthetic of the page for likes and clicks. No credit to the artist or their process is given.

I also think this could be a reason why art is so boo boo now (at least a lot to it) People aren’t concerned with the meaning purpose and process of the art. They just want to make the next viral piece. A piece that people will add to their pinterest boards, that will be retweeted, or worn by a big influencer. I too fall victim to doing this so I’m not just pointing fingers.

Next time I admire a piece I will think

Do you know the artist’s name?

What does it mean?

What was their journey?

Etc. etc. etc

Maybe I'm thinking too far into this

trynna be all intellectual
